When Don Walling bought the building his friends and family affectionately nicknamed “The Palace,” there were no luxury apartments on the top two floors.  There was just a mess there, and a bigger mess in the basement below the retail space.

But there clearly had been luxury there at one time.  Some long-ago day in the history of Dubuque, four families of means must have lived in what had been luxury but had now become rundown storage.  Abandoned space.

With the push to revitalize downtown, and with talk of the Americas River Project still young, Don Walling set out not so much to restore but to revitalize the building.

Don passed Oct. 3, 2009 and leaves behind him much to be proud of.  What we – and he – affectionately and sarcastically called “The Palace” because of the giant mess he found it in, we now more affectionately refer to as “The Walling Building” in loving memory of him.  Revitalizing this building was just one of his many passions, and we admit we’re a bit biased, but we think he did an amazing job preserving a building and producing homes.
